How to Make the Summer Handprint Printables
1. Set up your painting area.
- Choose your designs and print them onto white paper or white cardstock. Set them aside for now.
- Gather up your paint colors – we used dark pink, light pink, green, turquoise, orange, and black.
- Fill a large dish with warm soapy water and bring it to your workstation along with some clean rags, towels, baby wipes, and paper towels. This will help make clean-up as easy as possible.
- If you are doing the footprint art designs, bring a short stool or child-sized chair to the painting area.
2. Paint the handprint designs.
Apply non-toxic tempera paint onto your child’s hand. We used turquoise for the cactus, green for the pineapple top, dark pink for the flamingo, and light pink for the ice cream.
Guide them in stamping their hand onto the printable and help them press their hand down firmly to make a handprint. Lift their hand off of the paper and help them wash up with warm, soapy water. Set the painted paper aside to dry completely.
3. Paint the footprint designs.
Ask your child to sit on the low stool or chair and then paint non-toxic tempera paint onto the bottom of their foot. Guide them in stamping it onto the page, pressing their foot down to get a nice footprint.
Help them lift their foot off of the page and wash it off in the dish of warm soapy water.
Apply the same color of paint onto their other foot and make another footprint on the page – each of the 3 footprint designs (watermelon, strawberry, and sandy beach) feature 2 footprints, one from each foot.
Lift their foot off of the page and wash it with warm soapy water. Let all the painted pages dry completely.
4. Add final painted details.
For the watermelon design, the black seeds are made with fingerprints. Apply non-toxic black tempera paint onto your child’s finger and have them stamp dots all over the pink footprint stamps. Let the paint dry.
5. Add the pom pom cherry.
To finish off the ice cream cone, we glued a small red pom pom to the top of the handprint ice cream along with a stem that we drew with black marker.
6. Add flowers to the cactus.
Cut out 3 flowers for the cactus and glue them onto the fingertips. Kids can also paint or draw on the flowers!
Your summer handprint art is complete! Don’t forget to write your child’s name and the date on the back of each page.
