Supplies Needed

  • Popsicle sticks – both jumbo and regular for different parts of the house
  • Round dot stickers – in as many colors and sizes as you’d like. We used 16mm for the large stickers, 19mm for the ones cut into semi-circles and 6mm for the tiny ones. You can find all of the sizes here.
  • Pipe cleaners – we used two colors to make a DIY candy cane
  • Pom poms – we used a bunch of pom poms in the same size (1cm), with different colors to look like candies!
  • Pencil – for making a few lines and marks as we build the house
  • Gluetacky glue is perfect for gluing on the pom poms, and hot glue (with adult assistance) for gluing the popsicle sticks
  • Scissors – a strong pair that will cut through popsicle sticks. See these heavy duty scissors (adults to use).

How to Make a Popsicle Gingerbread House

1. Prep the walls.

Get 7 jumbo popsicle sticks and trim the rounded bottom ends off of four of them.

2. Glue the walls together.

With adult assistance, glue the 4 trimmed popsicle sticks to the ends of the other 3, so that the flat trimmed edges line up with the edge of the bottom popsicle stick, forming a backward L shape.

3. Make the roof.

Use two regular-sized popsicle sticks to form a peak on the front wall of the gingerbread house.

The peak should be centered on the wall, with the bottoms of the roof overlapping the top popsicle stick on the side wall.

Trace the outside of this roof with a pencil.

4. Cut out the roof shape.

Carefully trim off the excess popsicle sticks, following the line you just drew. It doesn’t need to be a perfectly straight edge, and the popsicle sticks may splinter a bit as you cut, but this will be covered up later.

5. Attach the roof.

Use a hot glue gun ( with adult assistance) to attach the left side of the roof to the house.

For the right side, trim away the rounded end of the popsicle stick that meets the top peak so that it sits flat on the house, and then glue this part of the roof down.

6. Add extra supports.

Flip over the gingerbread house so that you are looking at the back.

Hot glue (adult assistance) another jumbo popsicle stick (with about ¾” of the end trimmed off) right next to the side wall.

Then glue a full-length jumbo popsicle stick higher up, close to the peak of the roof. These will help you secure the roof later.

7. Attach the roof.

Flip the gingerbread house so that it is right-side up again. Line up four jumbo popsicle sticks to form the roof over the side wall.

Hot glue (adult assistance) them in place, securing them to the extra supports you added in the previous step. Once the hot glue has dried, cut off the excess popsicle sticks that are hanging on the top.

8. Add the top of the roof.

Trim a regular popsicle stick so that it sits snugly next to the peak of the roof and covers the top trimmed edges that you cut in the previous step. Glue in place.

9. Attach extra supports.

If your gingerbread house is feeling wobbly anywhere, glue extra popsicle stick pieces to the back to make it feel secure – we did this on the horizontal side wall.

10. Paint the gingerbread house.

Use a warm brown shade of acrylic paint to apply an even coat of paint all over the house. Let dry completely.

11. Glue on pom poms.

Use glue to attach pom poms onto the roof and bottom edges of the gingerbread house.

12. Make the door.

Cut out a simple rounded door shape from colored paper and attach it to the front of the gingerbread house with white glue.

Then take two different colored pipe cleaners and twist them together to look like a candy cane. Bend into an arch to match the shape of the door and hot glue (adult assistance) in place.

Trim off any overhanging pipe cleaners from the bottom if needed.

13. Decorate with stickers.

Use colorful round office stickers to decorate the house on the roof and walls.

Cut stickers in semi-circles, layer them, and apply them however you’d like.

Add sticker to the door. Cut a smaller sticker in half and add it for the door handle.

Attack a silver foam sticker above the door.
