RELATED: Butterfly Template

These butterfly bookmarks are surprisingly really easy to make! And I have two options for you to try:
- Use our free printables and color and cut!
- Or use our template to draw your own design

Supplies Needed
- Watercolor paper or cardstock – we used 140lb watercolor paper which is extra sturdy so the bookmarks will last. At minimum I recommend printing or making them on cardstock
- Watercolors
If you want to draw them yourself you’ll need:

- White Acrylic Paint Marker

How to Make a 3D Butterfly Bookmark
1. Print off the templates.
There are 3 templates to choose from. Color your own (2 versions) and a template to trace to draw your own. You can get the templates sent to you at the bottom of the post.

2. Color or paint the templates.
We used watercolors but you can use markers, paint, crayons or colored pencils to color the bookmarks.

3. Cut out the bookmark.

4. Fold the butterfly.
Keep the black portion showing and fold the wing backward as shown below.

5. Fold in the middle.

6. Add the bookmark.
You can position the butterfly bookmark at the top of the book or position it to come out the side of the book.

How to Draw Your Own Bookmark
1. Print the template.
Use our printable template to outline the bookmark shape. Outline with a pencil. You can also change the shape of the wing, if desired.

2. Draw and outline the wing design.
Using a pencil draw the inside wing design. Then using the black acrylic paint marker, outline the whole bookmark and design.

3. Color in the outline.
First, let the outline dry, and then use an eraser to erase any pencil markings. Then, use your acrylic paint marker or black marker to fill in the black outside of your butterfly design.

4. Paint or color the wings.

5. Add white spots.
Once the black acrylic paint is dry, use a white acrylic paint pen to add the white dots on the outside of the wing.
