Birthday Cake Playdough Recipe

We took our BEST playdough recipe and made it look and smell like a birthday cake. Kids will love pretending that they’re making a real birthday cake or cupcakes! Grab some birthday candles, silicone cupcake liners, and pom poms to make this playdough experience even more interactive and fun. This would make a fun birthday party activity too!

As always, supervise during play and while the playdough is taste safe it is not recommended to be eaten. Also keep out of reach of pets.

Birthday Playdough

Not only is this play dough fun to play with, but older kids will love helping to make it too. Since there is no food coloring involved, the process is easy and makes very little mess. Kids can help with mixing the dry ingredients, kneading the dough and adding the sprinkles in at the end.

We made this batch of birthday cake playdough without food coloring, but you can add food coloring if you want to make it look like a different flavor of cake.

How to Store the Playdough

Wrap your playdough in plastic wrap and then store it in an air-tight container or bag. The less exposure to air during storage, the longer it will last!

How to Make it Soft Again?

If your playdough dries out or turns out to be a little dry after making it, try adding in a few extra drops of oil. Knead the dough to mix in the oil. If this doesn’t soften it, try adding in a little bit of water and kneading again.

Materials

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil *do not use olive oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • sprinkles

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients (flour, salt, and cream of tartar). Mix well.
  • Add the vegetable oil and water to a large pot. Mix together.
  • Add 2 tsp of vanilla extract.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the pot and mix well.
  • Cook over low to medium heat, until a dough starts to form and does not look wet anymore. Once the dough starts forming a ball and looks fully cooked, remove it from heat. Let the dough cool.
  • Once cool enough to touch, knead the dough for 5 minutes. This will make the dough soft. If the dough is still sticky when you are trying to knead it, add it back to the pot and cook for another minute or so until it looks more dry.
  • Add sprinkles to the dough, one tablespoon at a time, until you're happy with how it looks. Knead the dough until the sprinkles are fully incorporated.
Note: the sprinkles may dye little hands so add only a few or skip the sprinkles if you are worried about getting dye on hands.

Notes

If your dough doesn’t feel soft, continue kneading for another 5 minutes.

Note: the sprinkles may dye little hands so add only a few or skip the sprinkles if you are worried about getting dye on hands.
