These cinnamon ornaments are similar to salt dough ornaments, but they require even less ingredients and there’s no baking required! Making these ornaments is a fun family activity for the holidays. Kids will love to give these as gifts too!

Supplies Needed to Make Cinnamon Ornaments
- Christmas Cookie Cutters
- Fabric -we used a buffalo check ribbon like this one (optional)
- Twine
- Cinnamon
- Applesauce
- Straw
- Hand Punch
- Hot Glue
- Ultra Fine Point Sharpie
Do I Need to Bake the Ornaments?
No, you can let them air dry instead.
Make sure to place them on a cookie drying rack so the bottoms get exposed to air. Allow to air dry for 2-3 days until fully dry before decorating. If you would like to bake them, bake at a low temperature, like 200 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour. Baking them may cause the ornaments to curl a little bit so that is why we prefer to let them air dry. If you’re under a time crunch because you want to decorate them the same day, baking them is fine and will help speed up the process!
Do I Need to Put Glue in the Recipe?
We tested a batch with glue (we used mod podge) and a batch without.
We didn’t notice any difference between the 2 ornaments. For this reason, we do not think the glue is necessary. Also, if you do use glue – keep in mind you would not want to place this in your oven and you would only want to air dry this version.
How Do I Store Them?
Store in a cool, dry place. These ornaments will completely dry out and should not go moldy if kept in a cool, dry place. Protect them from damage as they can break if not handled gently.
How to Make Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments
Cinnamon Applesauce Ornaments
Materials
- 1 cup cinnamon
- 1 cup applesauce
Instructions
- Mix 1 cup of cinnamon with 1 cup of applesauce.
- Continue mixing until it starts to form a dough. If you find it too sticky to roll out, sprinkle some cinnamon onto the counter or onto the rolling pin. Take a small amount and use your hands to flatten the dough so that it’s soft without bumps or cracks. You'll want the dough to be about 1/4 inch in thickness.
- Press a cookie cutter into the dough and remove the remaining dough around it. Continue this method for each ornament you want to make. Taking only a small amount at a time to make one ornament.
- Add a hole at the top of the ornament with a straw, so that you can tie twine onto the ornament for hanging. Then let air dry for 2-3 days. First, let dry on a baking tray on wax paper then transfer to a cookie drying rack the next day so the bottoms will dry out.Â
- After drying, if the edges of the ornament are a little rough, take your finger or a cloth and rub around the edge to smooth out the outside.
- Once fully dry, you can add the fabric ribbon. Take your cookie cutter and trace around it with a fine point sharpie for the size. Then cut out the fabrice shape and glue onto the ornament with mod podge. For the ornaments that are fully covered, use a hand hole punch on the ribbon to make a hole for where the twine will go through.
- For the bow, hot glue this onto the gingerbread man ornament.
- Tie twine to each ornament for hanging.

I would use unsweetened, yes.
Where can you buy a large size container of cinnamon? Â Or do you use several smaller jars of it?
I found bags of it for a good price at Walmart. Costco also sells it.
